Artist - Nadia Werbitzky (1922-2005)

Nadia Werbitzky was born in the Soviet Union in 1922 where she experienced deprivation and starvation under the Soviet regime. In 1942 her family was deported to Germany where they were confined to labor camps until the end of the war. Nadia studied at the Meisterschulle of Cologne and the Art Academy of Dusseldorf before moving to Toronto, where she met and married an American diplomat. The couple traveled extensively throughout Europe allowing Nadia to study the works of the Great Masters. In 1961, her first exhibition opened in Tehran, Iran.

Her painting, “Eternal Motherhood” won first prize at Frankfurt’s International Art Show in 1973.

Nadia spent the remainder of her days painting and repainting images she had of her childhood, her home, her people and her forced incarceration as a child during WWII. Nadia lost everything she had many times in her life, however her indomitable spirit, talent and sense of purpose in life has given us this gift from which we have much to learn.
